Shooting for Honors, all Purses Optional
Shooters are enduring very high shooting costs because of rising prices for fuel, ammunition, etc. This seriously complicates the effort to enroll new competition shooters as well as maintain current levels of practice and competition targets thrown.
In containing costs, more shooters would like to waive “mandatory purses” by shooting “targets only” for the price of entry fees thus eliminating their eligibility to money winnings yet preserving their ability to compete for any and all SCSSA & NSSA honors. Mandatory purses that don’t go back into class dictate that beginning and lower class shooters subsidize higher class shooters.
NSSA authorizes the practice of shooting “targets only” for honors provided the shoot program specifically states that any purses in question are optional. By designing shoot programs that state “any or all purses are optional” and/or “entry fees include no purses”, shoot management authorizes shooters who “don’t play the money” a chance to compete for honors in accordance with NSSA guidelines.
It is the recommendation of the SCSSA Executive Committee that South Carolina clubs hosting registered shoots consider designing shoot programs that provide those shooters who want the opportunity to shoot without ”playing the money” a chance to do so while maintaining NSSA honors eligibility. The SCSSA Executive Committee additionally urges SC clubs to use optional purses to afford those who want to “play the money” a chance to do so.
